Review: A coastal cottage escape

Heather Cottage weekend getaway, Pembrokeshire

For most people it’s going to be a standard weekend, but not for me. The sun is shining, the car is packed and I’m off to spend my anniversary weekend in a quaint cottage by the coast. As soon as my hubby gets home, we pile in the car and hit the road. Smiling away, we munch up the miles and before long we’ve arrived.

Our destination is Heather Cottage (near Nolton, Pembrokeshire) — a secluded little spot, that from the second you walk through the door says “forget the world and relax because you’re on holiday”.

We felt a million miles from the hustle and bustle of the city, even though in reality it’s only two and a half hours from Cardiff. It had everything we wanted. In fact when I decide I’ve had enough of city life, this is the kind of place I want to live.

Located in the rural hamlet of Rogeston, Heather Cottage is one of five traditional cottages and used to be part of an original stone barn. It’s less than a five minute drive from Nolton and Druidston beach, which means it won’t take you long to reach the gorgeous Coastal Path stretching the length of the Welsh Coast. Just perfect for walkers like us!

Renovated throughout, this hidden gem really is perfect for a little romantic getaway or a gorgeous escape for one if you quite like your own company. The terrace at the front is surrounded by large shrubbery and rose bushes, so it feels lovely and secluded — perfect for a spot of breakfast or a cuppa coffee in the morning!

Stepping through the front door, we immediately felt all our stresses and strains from the working week melt away. From the wooden floors to the large country kitchen sink to the soft green cupboards and wooden beams, the open-plan lounge-come-kitchen-come-dining-room is totally beautiful and peaceful.

The cottage does have a TV (and a cupboard full of DVDs in the hallway), but we tried to have as much of a tech-free weekend as we could. Life is crowded enough. But if you’re thinking a night in with a movie would be nice, I’d recommend bringing your own DVDs. Their collection is a bit, umm… Quirky…

This place really is decked out with everything you need — kitchenware, fridge and tiny freezer, washing machine, iron, cleaning stuff, even a pack of biscuits and a pint of milk were awaiting our arrival! We had to wack the heating on straight away, as it has high ceilings and was a chilly spring evening, but the place heats up really quickly.

Following through the hallway brought us to the bedroom. This room is just as peaceful as the rest of the house — gorgeous exposed stone walls, a super soft and cosy bed, luxuriously soft jute-like carpet and storage galore. We didn’t really need the cupboards for the short time we were there, but they’re great if you’re staying for a week or more.

Then there’s the bathroom — but how much can you really say about a bathroom? If you want a proper tour round the house, check below for a little video I took…

Although we did receive a free stay at the cottage in return for a review, I really couldn’t speak highly enough of this gorgeous getaway. I just wish we could have stayed longer.

If you’d fancy a stay in Heather Cottage, a short break like ours (1-4 nights) costs about £266 (prices vary depending on season). And weekly prices range from £350 (incl. gas and electricity) in low season to £599 in high season. To book, just visit Coastal Cottages of Pembrokeshire or call 01437 765 765.
